USA Swimming Safe Sport Program Enters Fifth Year

KOAA in Colorado Springs recently had a story highlighting USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program and the ways that policies, educational programs and reporting services can help keep young athletes safe.

As summer gets underway, a lot of kids and teens are participating in club sports. One program- Safe Sport- is aiming to foster a healthy relationship between coaches and athletes in an effort to reduce misconduct, such as physical and sexual abuse.

The USA Swimming Safe Sport program has been around since 2010. It was created after the organization had to deal with an abuse case involving one of its own. Susan Woessner, the director of Safe Sport, described the situation as a “time of crisis.” Instead of sweeping it under the rug, the organization faced the problem head on, using it to create and promote a healthy environment for members.
